Your month-by-month guide to a successful graduation!
September: The Starting Line
Your senior year is here! This month is all about getting organized and laying the groundwork for a successful year.
- Meet with your school counselor to do a final credit audit. Make sure you're on track to graduate!
- Start working on your college application essay. This can take time, so get a rough draft done early.
- Register for the SAT and SAT II Subject Tests. Pay attention to the deadlines.
- If you're an athlete, register with the NCAA.
- Create a draft of your resume.
- Get registered on the Common Application and link it to your Naviance account.
- Attend local college fairs to meet with admissions representatives and learn about different schools.
October: Tests and Forms
This month is all about taking your required tests and starting on financial aid forms.
- Take the SAT, SAT II, or ACT.
- Register for your FSA ID (for both you and a parent) to prepare for the FAFSA.
- Attend any college or career presentations at your school.
- Request letters of recommendation from teachers, coaches, or mentors.
- If needed, apply for the CSS Profile.
November: Deadlines Loom
November is a big month for college application deadlines. Be sure to stay on top of your work.
- Attend Report Card Night.
- Take any final SAT or SAT II tests.
- Complete the CSS Profile Application.
- Look for college open houses to visit.
December: The Final Push
Finish up any last-minute applications before winter break.
- Early action and early decision application deadlines are due this month.
- Take any final tests for the SAT, SAT II, or ACT.
- Continue to use Naviance for college planning and research.
- Double-check that your CSS Profile application is complete.
January: Prepare for Graduation
It's a new year, and it's time to start thinking about the end of your high school journey!
- Visit your school counselor for one more credit audit.
- Finalize and submit any remaining college applications.
- Research and apply for scholarship opportunities.
- Order your cap and gown!
February: Scholarship Time
Focus on finding and applying for scholarships to help pay for college.
- Fill out as many scholarship applications as you can.
- Work on any credit recovery you need to stay on track for graduation.
March: Stay on Track
Continue applying for scholarships and be sure to let your counselor know where you get accepted.
- If you're applying to a community college, complete the application and take the Accuplacer Test.
- Continue working on scholarship applications.
- Notify your guidance counselor of your college acceptances.
- Don't forget to save money for prom!
April: Decisions, Decisions
This is the month to weigh your options and make your final choice.
- Carefully analyze all of your college acceptance letters.
- Go over your financial aid packages with your counselor and family.
- Appeal a financial aid package if you need to.
- Visit the colleges you are considering one last time.
- Get a final graduation check from your counselor.
May: The Big One
The biggest deadline of the year is here!
- The college deposit deadline is May 1st. This is a hard deadline to reserve your spot at the school of your choice.
- Register for new student orientation.
- Take any required placement tests.
June: Celebration!
